According to Nick Cremelie:

This seems to be the critical routine.  Since it has been changed
crucially since gpc-971001, you should try a more recent ("alpha")
version of GPC, available from

    ftp://agnes.dida.physik.uni-essen.de/gnu-pascal/alpha/ .

(I think, the next release can be labeled "beta" again.:-)
