Automatic gpc installation

Hi Stephen,

made the changes to meet your requirements, but could NOT test the result.
I changed calls to make into gmake within the script, so we wouldn't need
the statement 'alias make=/usr/local/bin/gmake' anymore, if you are sure
that gmake exists somewhere in your PATH.
