DEC alpha, character escapes

Hi Folks,

just for the record the building of gpc-20010924 is straight on DEC
(Compaq) alpha running under SuSE 7.1 Linux. 26 tests of the suite are
failed. If anyone interested I can send the log-file.

Now the question: what is the compiler switch for interpreting
character escape sequences? (Like '\t' for tab, '\n' for new line etc..)
The {$E+} directive or the --char-escapes switch does not seems to work.
